Classic Wrestlers of the week #5 July23rd-July 29th 2007

This entry is part [part not set] of 11 in the series Classic Wrestlers of the Week

Bonjour! This is week 5 of my new hopefully long term series Wrestlers of the Week, Where I will be very bias every week and use these biases to decide who the best wrestler of 15 years ago were!

The Rules are simple
– The evaluation period start and ends on Monday every week (in 2007)
– The higher you rank the more points you get
– You must have won a match this week to be considered for the list.
–Tag teams are typically bunched together unless one is significantly more notable than the other
– The time period is 15 years ago to the day.

People who show up on this list spread across 6 different shows with only one of them being on multiple and they will be ranked on my personal enjoyment of the match (70%) and the significance of their victories (30%).

Just a reminder our current top 10 is

1) Takashi Sasaki 15
2) Kurt Angle, Yuji Nagata, KENTA, Taiji Ishimori & Tetsuhiro Kuroda 10
7) CIMA, Daisuke Sekimoto, Katsumasa Inoue, Mammoth Sasaki, Joker, Yoshihito Sasaki 9

Now let’s get to the list!

10) Kevin Steen (ROH/PWG)

Kevin Steen had a week of really good wrestling but also A lot of losses. Actually went 1/3 this week but the 1 just so happened to be him winning the PWG tag team titles over Roderick Strong & Pac at the PWG anniversary show. And while he did lose to Jack Evans it was a banger and he looked great during it.

Total Points: 1

9) Chris Hero (ROH)

Chris Hero earned a spot on this weeks list by having a banger match with Erick Stevens in the ROH Race to the top tournament. Also had a great showing in defeat against El Generico. After some hard hitting matches Chris Hero gets 2 points.

Total Points: 2

8) AJ Styles (TNA)

AJ Styles earned a spot on this list by defeating Abyss on Impact with a match that had a lot of interference and chaos and was just everything I love in wrestling. Glass blood and Kurt Angle. 3 points to AJ Styles.

Total Points: 3

7) Roderick Strong (ROH/PWG)

Roderick Strong earned a spot on this list for having 2 bangers (and a weak 8 man tag but it happens) While he did lose the PWG Tag Titles an the 10,000$ tag match he did have a really good title defense against Jimmy Rave, Gran Akuma & Austin Aries it a really good for way.

Total Points: 4

6) The World’s Greatest Tag Team (Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin) (RAW)

Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin earned a spot on this list by having an amazing 4 minute match against Brian Kendrick & Paul London on Raw in what was one of my favorite under 5 minute matches in Raw history.

Total Points: 5

5) Jack Evans (ROH)

Jack Evans earned a spot on this list by having 3 great matches this week. First he started by having one of the best matches of the week against Kevin Steen where they went to war with eachother then the next night he had a banger with Brent Albright where even after being put through a table with a sick powerbomb he still came back to win but then he finally fell to Claudio Castagnoli in the semi finals in another good match.

Total Points: 6

4) Bryan Danielson (ROH/PWG)

Bryan Danielson had a weird week. Had a decent match against The Briscoes teaming with Nigel where they loss and then had a bad 8 man tag against Nigel. But despite those 2 losses and admittedly boring matches he came back and had a banger against Necro Butcher of all people and on top of that also had a great match against El Generico to win the PWG championship. So after an up and down week Danielson finds himself in 2nd place on the overall rankings

Total Points: 13

3) Jaki Numazawa & Jun Kasai (BJW)

Numazawa & Jun Kasai both earned a spot on this list by having a extremely fun Scaffold Death Match against Abdullah Kobayashi & Yuko Miyamoto at BJW that was unlike any other Scaffold match I’ve ever seen. Low enough to do so many spots but high enough to look brutal. A very fun one to watch.

Total Points: 8 each

2) El Generico (ROH/PWG)

El Generico had an amazing week. Started it by having an amazing match against Delirious at day one of the ROH RTTT tournament and then moved on to have a good match against Chris Hero in round two. Generico then had a good match against Davey Richards before losing in the finals in an amazing match against Claudio Castagnoli. But his week doesn’t end there because he then travels all the way to California and defeats Roderick Strong & Pac to win the PWG Tag Team Titles and then ends the week losing the PWG title against Bryan Danielson in another match of the week contender.

Total Points: 9

1) Claudio Castagnoli (ROH)

Claudio Castangnoli started the week by having a decent match against Hallowicked by then he stepped it up by the second night where he had an amazing match against Mike Quackenbush in what was a technical masterpiece, Then a nice smart brawl with Jack Evans where he tried to preserve all the energy he could but Jack Evans was just too fast and then he went on to win the finals of the ROH RTTT tournament against El Generico in an amazing finals.
